Rules for Two-handed Cribbage
Cribbage is played with a 52-card deck. The first player to score 121
points is the winner. Score is usually kept by pegging on a cribbage board.
To start, each player cuts a card, low cut deals first and the deal
alternates.
Six cards are dealt to both players. Each discards two cards face down
into the crib which becomes a third four-card hand that is scored by
the dealer.
The computer cuts a card from the remaining deck and places it face up on
the playing field. This card is called the UPCARD. If the UPCARD is a
Jack, the dealer scores two points.
Pegging Play: The players place their cards face up one at a time per the
following rules:
1. Face cards count 10, and all other cards their pip-value.
Suits are of no consideration during pegging play.
2. Opponent plays first with play alternating, keeping a running
total of the sum of the value of the cards played. Each player
announces the total as he plays, up to but not exceeding 31.
3. Player making the total 15 or 31 scores two points.
4. Pairs score 2 points, triplets score 6, and 4 of a kind scores 12.
5. Three and four card runs score the length of the run. Cards may be
in any sequence. Ace is low and king is high. A-K-Q is not a run.
6. Play starts over at zero when the total reaches 31.
7. A player who cannot play because he is out of cards or without
exceeding 31 says "Go" and his opponent plays on alone according
to rules without exceeding 31. If the total is 31, he scores 2
points, otherwise he scores one point for the "Go".
8. Play again starts over at zero with the player who said "Go"
playing first unless both players are out of cards.
9. If a player should miss pegging score that is due him, the opponent
may declare "Muggins" and peg the missed score himself. This is
true only in the scoring of the hands which follows.
After each player has played all four of his cards, the hands are scored.
Opponent first, then dealer and the dealer's crib. The up card is
the fifth card for each hand and crib.
Scoring:
1. Each possible pair counts 2 points, i.e, three of a kind scores 6,
and similarly four of a kind scores 12.
2. A run of three or more scores its length.
3. Each combination of cards that totals 15 scores 2 points.
4. Flushes of 4 or 5 cards score their length, except a Crib flush
must be 5 cards of the same suit.
5. The Jack (Nobs) of the same suit as the up card scores 1 point.
It is impossible for any hand to score 19, therefore a zero score is
often referred to as a "19 hand".
The highest possible score is 29 for a 5 cut up and three 5s and Nobs
in the hand.
The winner is declared immediately upon either player's score equalling
or exceeding 121 points.
A player whose score does not exceed 90 when the winner is declared is
termed "SKUNKED", similarly if his score does not exceed 60, he is termed
"DOUBLE SKUNKED". That is a real "OOPS".
Enjoy the Game.
